Want to have your cake and eat it, too? A carefully designed 20-knot semi-planing powerboat can achieve more than twice the mileage of fast planing boats and improve on the performance of many boats presently operating in this speed range. While displacement- and planning-hull designs have been extensively researched, and are fairly well understood, the transition region we call semi-planing has notexcept perhaps in small warshipseven though many boats operate in that speed range most of the time. Well discuss the hull characteristicsbeam/length, chines, entry angle, and deadrisethat are desirable for these in-between speeds, typically 1220 knots, and well consider the powering options to obtain the best results for speed, fuel efficiency, handling, stability, and cost. Well also look at the impact of bottom loading on performance and efficiency. To illustrate how a semi-planing hull design can top the efficiency of slower and faster boats while reaching planing boat speeds, well compare three 40-footers (12.2m). Youll see that these boats are less expensive to build, buy, and operate, making them increasingly well suited to these changing times. Steve Dalzell (The Landing School of Boat Building & Yacht Design)Eric Sorensen (Sorensens Guide to Powerboats LLC)Winn Willard (C. Raymond Hunt Associates)
What are the design and construction differences in the processes between custom and production FRP boats? In this overview, well contrast the design and build processes for both, focusing primarily on FRP components such as the hull, deck, and interior liner(s). Well look at the intended purpose of the boat as we discuss costs and benefits of various materials, including fabric, resin, core, and adhesives, and touch on the regulatory demands and requirements for scantlings. [For a more detailed discussion, look at Session 1601 Designing & Testing Scantlings.] Well give you some guidelines for evaluating temporary and permanent tooling, male and female, and well discuss the extent of the tooling being produced. Well also outline fabrication methods such as hand layup, infusion, wet impregnation, and pre-impregnation, and compare them in terms of quality, consistency, and process costs. Finally, well discuss labor requirements, particularly in terms of skill level and specialization. Roger Brown (Roger Brown,Naval Architect)Steve Burke (Burke Design LLC)
Gel-cell, AGM, and lithium-ion batteries offer many advantages over traditional flooded lead-acid batteries, including greater capacity, lighter weight, and faster charging. But to maximize these advantages, the onboard electrical system must be designed to meet the demands of the battery technology. Simply dropping a set of these new batteries into an existing system can lead to premature battery failure, electrical equipment damage, or even onboard fire. In this session we will explain how these batteries differ from lead-acid batteries, and well outline the advantages of the various battery types. Well also discuss the factors you must consider in a conversion project, and well explain how system designers and installers can head off potential problems. Finally, well show you how to determine the true cost of the conversion. Dwight Escalera (Executive Marine Services LCC)
As boatyard managers preparing quotes and estimates for customers, we tend to concentrate on the what and the how much of a job, but we dont always understand the why of the projector how to manage the diverse elements that must be addressed before you can write a successful contract that adds profit to the bottom line. You might also need to consider a number of issues that have nothing at all to do with the boat. For example, why is this project being done in the first place? How will you schedule this to fit in with your existing workloads? What will you do about securing outside contractors, identifying appropriate repair materials, and hiring a surveyor as an independent observer to protect the interests of all concerned? Who will pay the bill and be the owners rep? Where will the work be done? And, when will you have the space, personnel, and tools you need? Join us as we discuss best practices for the documents we write, the information we manage, and the lessons weve learned the hard way. Jim Bronstien (Marine Business Advisors)
To make money in the boating industry, you have to know whats for sale, how to get it, what to sell, and who wants to buy it. In this session, well demonstrate North Carolinas Boating Industry Services online search tool that helps businesses identify and interact with OEM and supply-chain clusters, thereby strengthening the states marine industry, and ultimately creating and retaining jobs for boat builders, repairers, and suppliers. Well show you how to create new and innovative business-to-business relationships that will result in improved sales and enhanced market penetration for your company. The North Carolina program is also designed to enhance the viability of supply chain companies in the marine industry by providing them with assistance in sales to state and federal government agencies; export sales and financing; commercialization of technology; and marketing and branding. Join us to find out how it all works in North Carolina, and how it can work for you, too. Mike Bradley (North Carolina Marine Trades Services)

One glance at the latest cruiser/racers in action and you know they aren't what you camped out on and slammed around in beer can series in the late '80s. We'll give a good sense of the latest design trends in the type: What bleeds down from the pure racing side (it looks like more all the time) and what concessions are still made to cruising in relative comfort (looks like less all the time). Our impression has been that boats with the cruiser/racer designation have been evolving into ever more sophisticated racing machines while the cruising side has become secondary, and accommodations have trended to the more spartan, are we wrong? We're looking for an update from these two designers on the status of what has always been a bit of a hybrid, split-identity boat type complete with some of their own most recent work. Mark Mills (Mills Design Ltd.)Rodger Martin (Rodger Martin Design)
What went wrong? The repair job looks great, but the final finish isnt what you expected. What happened? That final finish is the key to your customers satisfaction and unless your work is perfect, that customer will be unhappy with the entire repair. The do-over is an expensive way to learn your trade, and your professional credibility suffers. In this session, well teach you how to examine gelcoat damage so you know the nature and extent of the problem and can correctly employ the right skills, tools, and materials to fix it. Well also explain how to prepare an estimate that wont leave youor your customerwith any painful surprises when you finish the job. Youll see that success with gelcoat is in the details of the surface preparation, application technique, and good color match, which requires knowledge of gelcoat properties and behaviors. Charlie Teran (Fiberglass Specialties)
Thrust-bearing systems provide the boatbuilder and ultimately the boat operator with a variety of benefits, albeit at a cost. Because these systems transfer propeller thrust from the motor mounts to the hull, via a flexible medium, the engine can be mounted on softer, more resilient supports, thereby reducing noise and vibration transmitted to the vessel. In this graphics-intensive presentation, well detail the advantages, challenges, and common pitfalls of installing and maintaining thrust-bearing systems in a range of vessels. Well focus on avoiding errors when installing or servicing these systems, and youll walk away with a practical, hands-on understanding of industry best practices as well. Steve DAntonio (Steve DAntonio Marine Consulting Inc.)
Lower than normal rainfall, followed by severe droughts, has reduced water levels disastrously in lakes around the country. Well discuss the impacts of these changes on the marina industry, and tell you how marina managers are dealing with the issue. Youll learn about the severity of water-level fluctuations as well as the short- and long-term direct economic effects of extended drought conditions. Well present physical and political strategies, including information from the recently released Lake Lanier Economic Impact Study, which was developed specifically to address economic losses that were a result of the recent drought. Well also share some personal insights about managing crises in the marina business. This session will be a valuable retrospective for any marine business owner on an inland lake. Alex Laidlaw (Westrec)
All ships have Automatic Identification System (AIS), and it's now coming soon to a boat near you. Some claim AIS is the greatest advance in navigation-communications since radar. AIS exchanges pertinent navigation information in near real-time between vessels and shore authorities. The AIS informationsuch as unique identification, position, course, speed, heading, status, destinationcan be displayed on a screen. AIS is digital, so you can readily integrate it with a myriad of standardized marine electronics including radar, ECDIS, multi-functions displays, and PCs. In this session, well answer your questions: What exactly is AIS? Will boats be required to have it? What are the latest AIS rules and regulations? What is the difference between Class A and Class B systems? How do you properly install and integrate AIS with other systems? What does the future hold for AIS? And, what do you need to tell your customers asking about AIS and how they can be safe on the water? Jorge Arroyo (USCG)Rich Bettie (Radio Holland)
Looks and functionality matterand marrying them effectively is the subject of this seminar. During the construction of a large yacht, the owner or yard will typically bring in an industrial designer to finesse the general arrangement plan, translate the clients preferences into reality, and style the yacht in a unique, attractive, and functional way. Savvy production builders are increasingly engaging the services of industrial designers and stylists to help set their products apart from the competition. Well discuss the design process from development stage to floor plans, sightlines, ergonomics, special places, skylighting, and details. Well also examine the role of the industrial designer, particularly the designers relationship with the client, naval architect, and yard, and well offer advice on how to draw out the clients often unspoken wants and needs. Along the way, well question the axiom Form follows function. Safety should never be secondary to achieving a certain look or style. Additionally, the designer must always anticipate worst-case conditions to provide sensible solutions that will prevent injury or loss. Finally, well show you some tricks for creating distinctive interiors. Joseph Artese (Joseph Artese Design)
Longitudinal stringers and transverse floors for FRP boats have been fabricated traditionally from "egg crated" plywood. But in the last several years other materials options have become available, including fiber-reinforced urethane board products, as well as PVC, polyurethane, and PET foams, solid wood, balsa, and plastic honeycombs. In addition, many builders morphed the primary and secondary structure into separately molded laminated parts including preformed PU foam components with a covering of dry fabric. In this session, well discuss the pros and cons of these materials along with grid system construction and installation, including male and female molded systems that can be bonded in with adhesives or fiberglass tabbing. For the purposes of this seminar, well narrow our focus to powerboats between 20 and 50 (6m and 15m) as we help you review the design characteristics required in a structural grid system. Lou Codega (Naval Architect)Rob Mazza (Marine Consultant for Baltek Inc.)
When a metal vessel is constructed with inaccessible structural areas, corrosion can take place in them unobserved, causing the hull to lose integrity. In this session, well consider three components that provide solutions to this problem. First, well touch on a boats design and build, which must allow for future access and preservation techniques. Well discuss the chemical processes taking place in these compartments and describe the likely damage that surveyors and repairers will find. Next, well talk about identifying those inaccessible areas during surveys, and review inspection and metering options available to surveyors. Finally, we will ask and answer the question: If we have areas that are inaccessible, how can we analyze the clues that we do have to determine what is going on in the areas we cant see? Darel McCormick (NOAA Small Boat Program)
Home to one of the most successful and widely respected marine-industry apprenticeship programs in the world, New Zealand has more than 600 apprentices and 185 sponsoring companies. In this session, well answer the key question: Howd they do that? Well share how the apprenticeship program works, starting with an explanation of how New Zealand defines, recruits, and trains apprentices. Next, well describe how companies support and benefit from the program, and well tell you how the New Zealand Marine Industry Training Organisation keeps it all moving forward in a thoroughly sustainable fashion. Finally, well welcome your questions and observations about apprenticeship programs in the U.S. and in other countries. Chris van der Hor (New Zealand Marine Industries Training Organisation)
If you are a dealer, your ability to translate technical information and communicate it clearly to customers is valuable. This skill not only helps you make sales, it also assists you in heading off misunderstandings and disputes. Your sales people should know more than your customers do about the boats, products, and services youre selling. And, once they really understand the product, their enthusiasm for it will be contagious. It is critical for your staff to be able to explain in a comprehensive, in-depth fashion how your products or services differ from those of your competition. In addition, your service personnel need to know how to explain technical matters effectively to customers. For example, why is specific preventative maintenance needed? Offering your customers clear, jargon-free explanations of service and repair charges will result in satisfied customers and repeat business. In this session, well offer practical advice, strategies, and real-life examples of effective product training and technical communication. Will Keene (Edson International)Don MacKenzie (Boats Inc.)Eric Sorensen (Sorensens Guide to Powerboats LLC)
If you are interested in re-powering and propulsion issues, bring your questions to this session, and we will examine several different methods of power prediction for a variety of craft of less than 79 (24m). Well show you how inaccuracies can arise and how to avoid problems. For this session, well give you the designers perspective in analyzing resistance and then selecting the most appropriate propulsion unit. Well focus on simplified formulas and systematic series, but will also touch on tank-testing and CFD. [For more detail on those two methods, attend Session 701 Tow-Tank Testing v. CFD: Evaluating and Optimizing Planing Hulls.] Well cover limitations and known problems with each method, and present case studies as we analyze the hull-shape parameters of particular boats. For technicians and even designers, dealing with the neutral and grounding in boats and marinas often leads to confusion and the risk of potentially deadly consequences. In this guide to American Boat & Yacht Council standards, well discuss when you should connect the neutral and the ground and when you should isolate them. Well present some methodologies to test for ABYC compliance, and well highlight the consequences of noncompliance in terms of electrical safety and corrosion. If you need a dedicated focus on this important aspect of marine electrical distribution systems, join us here. This seminar will be of most interest to technicians, engineers, surveyors, and boatbuilders. David Rifkin (Quality Marine Services LLC)
As a boat journeys from manufacturer to dealer to marina to boatyard, each sector of the industry interacts with a shared customer base of boat owners. As partners in the marine industry, how do we encourage and support boat ownership? This panel will discuss ways in which the industry can become stronger and more effective through cooperative efforts aimed at improving customer service and reducing customer aggravation all down the line. Our goal here is to identify common ground and to learn from each other. Jim Bronstien (Marine Business Advisors)Thom Dammrich (National Marine Manufacturers Association)James Frye (Association of Marina Industries-AMI)Phil Keeter (Marine Retailers Association of America)
Defined as yachts over 78 (24m), superyachts are typically much larger, and the demand for them is growing as the number of potential owners with net worth in the billions increases. As the superyacht market expands, so will the need for designers, builders, and myriad support services dealing with everything from acquisition and ownership to resolving financial, taxation, legal, and management issues. In this seminar, well describe the state of the superyacht market, providing current numbers for every facet of the industry. Well also talk about how this particular niche affects the rest of the marine industry and what the long-range implications are for boatyard and marinas as the size of these yachts continues to grow. Lorenzo Pollicardo (CNA-Marine Technical Manager)
With todays complex outboard engines, many more items are now considered routine maintenance. Unfortunately, due to the current economy a great deal of professionally performed routine maintenance has been cut back. Many owners are attempting to service their own boats, and due to their unfamiliarity with marine industry standards, you might now be dealing with DIYers who do not understand that installing auto parts in a boat is a direct violation of Coast Guard safety regulations. Well show you how to convince your customers that cutting corners will only endanger themselves and their passengers. Well also discuss the introduction of E10 fuel (gasoline with 10thanol) and the effect it has had on outboard engines. Unlike automotive engines, marine outboards are experiencing E10-related faults and failures at an alarming rate, but you might be able to minimize many of these with yearly servicing. Join us to learn how to educate your customers by tapping into the many resources and organizations that can help you find and share this important information. [For additional information on ethanol fuel, attend Session 705 Boat Fuel Systems.] John Bernier (North Atlantic Marine Services)
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a method of product design and development that incorporates data from the systematically recorded history of past component failures into the refinement of an existing model or creation of a new design. Its a method not widely applied in boat design and building. Join Eric Hall of Hall Spars and Rigging for an explanation of how his team relies on FMEA in creating the rigging components and full custom rig designs that have made them one of the industrys leading rigging and mast suppliers. FMEA helps the company look at past experiences with products, processes, and materials, identifying potential failure modes, and allowing the team to avoid those failures during design and manufacturing. Join us to discover more about this illuminating planning and design tool that can help you minimize risks first, and minimize warranty issues later. Eric Hall (Hall Spars & Rigging)
In most composite boats, gelcoat is the thinnest material layer, the most visible, and often the most troublesome. As a builder, you have many opportunities to get gelcoat rightor wrong. Well take a detailed look, from start to finish, at best practices, including your initial product acceptance checks, handling and storage, surface prep, application, and post-application finishing. Well also consider a number of issues related to gelcoat finishing. For example, is it possible for you to achieve yacht-quality standards by brushing gelcoat, or must you always spray it? What risks are you taking when you work with coated sandpapers for abrasive surface preparation? What's the best way for you to determine when a gelcoat is ready to be skincoated? What causes gelcoat porosity? Should you dilute gelcoat if it won't spray with your equipment? Join us to address all of these topics, and bring along your own questions, too. Bob Lacovara (Convergent Composites)Bruce Pfund (Bruce Pfund/Special Projects LLC)

Larry Akins (Fireboy-Xintex Inc.)Dave Blice (Fireboy-Xintex Inc.)Phil Cappel (Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety, United States Coast Guard)
From its earliest stages through to final implementation, redeveloping a marina facility must include engineering in defining the project goals and assessing the existing facility conditions. In this session, well draw on two instructive case studies: the Dillon Marina (Dillon, CO) and the Liberty Park and Clarksville Marina on the Cumberland River (Clarksville, TN). Situated 9,017 (2,748m) above sea level, Dillon Marinas location presents unique design and construction challenges. The facility is sited on one of Denvers major water resources, and the water level fluctuates as much as 40 (12.2m) during the boating season. The new Liberty Park and Clarksville Marina faces many of the challenges of a redevelopment project, with the added constraint of river-level fluctuations that require special engineering considerations. Join us to learn about the successful evolution of marina construction and reconstruction, including design, engineering, permitting, grant funding and acquisition, materials selection, construction documentation, and administration. Bob Evans (Dillon Marina)Bruce Lunde (JJR)
This is the bug on vessels. Interference on a boat is everywhere, and it emanates from many different sources. With increased integration of electronics on networks, with high-end audio and visual components and handheld devices on board, mitigating interference is more critical than ever. While you cannot prevent interference, you can learn to detect it and how to apply best practices to lessen its effects. In this session, youll learn how to filter out existing interference sources and where not to locate potentially interfering products. Well also discuss cable types, cable installation, and connections. Finally, well explain how system grounding can diminish the effects of interference. David Gratton (Martek)Johnny Lindstrom (Westport Shipyard)
Trim tabs are meant to adjust a boats lift to compensate for variables such as speed, weight distribution, and water conditions. When these devices deflect water downward, they cause the stern to rise, reducing hull resistance. Simple enough in concept, yet many boat builders and repairers could benefit from taking this short course in trim-tab basics. The session will be a lively exchange of ideas and information about this equipment, including how trim tabs affect performance, efficiency, and safety. Well cover the history and past applications of trim tabs, particularly in relation to U.S. Navy small craft. Youll learn about a number of specific problems and various solutions for military, recreational, and commercial craft. Well also tell you about pending changes in trim-tab technology and applications. Throughout this seminar, well welcome your questions, comments, and concerns. Speaker to be announced.

In this session, well briefly describe the various construction methods and typical failure modes, as well as current and forthcoming rules and regulations. Then, well focus on best practices for inspection, including working with advanced NDE (non-destructive evaluation) techniques for assessing these ever more critical structures. Roby Scalvini (Marine Survey Bureau)
You already know the various structural elements of a wooden boat: frames, planking, decks, backbone timbers, and fastenings. Here, well investigate the common failure modes of these structural elements, and well describe how to repair them. The repair discussion will begin with the objective of the repairthat is, whether its a quick and dirty fix, a high-quality restoration, or something in between. Well also consider when its best to repair a frame, or when its best to replace it. Well tell you how to repair a butt or hood end without replacing the entire plank, how to chase down and stop leaks in backbone timbers with an unconventional but highly effective caulking method, and how to replace stopwaters without disrupting the planking. Well also give you some well-proven techniques for sistering keelbolts, including the gritty job of assessing their condition. Then, well explain how to design your repairs for longevity, placing special emphasis on ventilation, bedding, and the painting of faying surfaces. Finally, well outline the many decisions you might need to make in a phased, multi-year restoration that still keeps the boat in service from season to season. Jim Moores (Moores Marine of the Palm Beaches Inc.)Brion Rieff (Brion Rieff Boat Builder)
To be truly effective, your training program should include a mix of targeted job skills, personal effectiveness tools, and academic competencies. Well present comparative results for several real-world cases, and well demonstrate the numerous quantitative and qualitative hydrodynamic performance benefits that you can achieve with each approach. In closing, well give you a comparison of the relative time and budgetary cost of each method for a typical hydrodynamic evaluation. Michael Morabito (Stevens Institute of Technology)Gregory Platzer (Platzer Marine Propulsion Inc.)
In todays quickly changing market, designers and builders need to produce quality composite parts from tooling that is accurate and easily modified. During the past two decades, a number of key technologies have converged to provide the composite industry with a high-performance means of manufacturing limited-production plug and mold tooling. With current computer power, 3D CAD software, CNC milling equipment, and dedicated materials, the modern boat manufacturer can match precision tooling to its production requirements. In this seminar, we will review the pros and cons of limited-production mold tooling. Well start with project analysis, i.e., what you need in terms of basic design criteria and computer models, and well talk about what you should expect when you receive the tool. Well also provide typical fabrication and lead times for tools, and well describe the additional work that you might have to perform on the tooling, when it is newand as it ages. Finally, well remove the mystique from limited-production tooling by asking you to join us in discussing the current state of composite tooling relative to your own experience. Doug Blount (DLBA Robotics Ltd.)J B Turner (Front Street Shipyard)
Distributed power systems have been mainstream in the automotive and industrial worlds for some time. These systems made their first sustained entry into the marine world more than five years ago, but the challenges of adapting this technology to boats have been greater than anticipated. Consequently, they have failed to gain significant traction. Still, as distributed power systems for marine applications have evolved, the lessons learned have resulted in relatively mature products that are finally beginning to break out of a niche marketplace. In this seminar, well explore the development of these systems and examine their track records as we help you decide whether or not it is time for you to make a move into digital switching. Nigel Calder (Calder Enterprises)
When a boat owners concept of time and budget is in stark contrast to your own assessment of a major repair, you can expect to deal with freak-outs and meltdowns. From negotiating the first work order to drawing up the final billing and summary of repairs, you need to keep your owners engaged and abreast of the work you are doing on their boats. Here well help you learn to manage owners expectations and deal with the sometimes inevitable conflicts. Well offer you an arsenal of techniques, ranging from straightforward, transparent billing systems and weekly status reports to photo documentation, e-mails, and videosall designed to provide timely, accurate, and pertinent project information to your owners, whether they live down the block or are traveling halfway across the world. By the end of this session, youll know some simple procedures to set the stage for the relationship and the project. Well help you ensure that you and your customer speak the same language, and well offer ways to reduce stress for you both. Jim Moores (Moores Marine of the Palm Beaches Inc.)
For model year 2012, the EPA will begin requiring boatbuilders to design their fuel systems to prevent spit-back and spillage during refueling, and will start to mandate evaporative emission controls. At the same time, Californias draft regulation is on hold, but it could go to board approval prior to IBEX 2011. Lastly, the EPA recently approved a waiver allowing sales of fuel containing up to 15thanol. The EPA evaporative emission regulations are based on emission testing using 10thanol. Will 15thanol increase emissions? Will it require a change in technology? As fuels change, boatbuilders, engine manufacturers, and component fabricators need reliable predictions for next year and well into the future. Well bring you the newest information on these topics, including the EPAs diurnal transition program, Californias regulations, E15, and the latest technology to meet the EPA requirements. Our goal is to provide the best available information so you can make informed decisions to position your business. John Adey (American Boat & Yacht Council)George Bellwoar (Perko)John McKnight (National Marine Manufacturers Association)Sean Whelan (Attwood Marine)also invited: Sara Zaremski (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
More than 80% of marine technicians gain their core fundamental skills through on-the-job training. Unfortunately, this training method allows experienced technicians to pass some bad habits and shortcuts on to new employees who never develop a systematic approach to troubleshooting. In the marine industry, technicians often fix problems, but are they putting a Band-Aid on a symptom? Or, are they truly addressing the root cause of the problem? In this session, we’ll show you a six-step process that will help you become a troubleshooter who knows how to fix the problem right the first time by locating and eliminating the trouble source in any work flow. You can apply these steps to almost any technical troubleshooting situation. Because this process is not married to a specific technology, you can apply it while analyzing electrical, mechanical, or structural defects. During the developmental or design stage of a project, you can follow these same steps to predict weak points and head off costly rework or warranty issues. Speaker: John Bernier (North Atlantic Marine Services)
Designing and building a one-off boat can be an exciting, engaging, and satisfyingly creative opportunity for owner and designer. Most new custom yacht design projects begin with a dialog with the client. In this session, you’ll hear from two established designers who will explain how to learn what the client desires, and how then to develop an appropriate concept that remains true to the client’s ideas. During the process, the designer must analyze numerous complex requirements and be ready to offer solutions. Our speakers will begin by teaching you some design basics before going on to describe how each of them works to translate the client’s wishes into the finished boat. We'll look at design steps and details from preliminary hull lines to interior layout, sail plan, deck plan, a construction section, preliminary weight estimate, and performance prediction. Rodger Martin (Rodger Martin Yacht Design); Mark Mills (Mills Design Ltd)
Theres more to shaft alignment than adjusting motor mounts. A key to establishing efficient fuel consumption on boats is to ensure that whenever an engine needs to be run for energy production, it is only run at its peak efficiency. This means you must be able to manipulate the loads and energy sources on the boat in such a way that you maintain the optimum load on the engine at all times. Until recently, this procedure was next to impossible to achieve in practice, but during the past few years several new technologies have emerged. When combined, these technologies make peak efficiency operation a practicable and cost-effective solution to onboard energy needs, often with quite astonishing improvements in efficiency as compared to conventional approaches. In this seminar, youll learn about these new technologies and products, as well their implications for both DC and AC systems design. Nigel Calder (Calder Enterprises)

Millions of composite boats have structural core in their hulls or decks, or in both. If these cores were not properly installed, or if the boats have not been well maintained, the core can be susceptible to water migrating through the laminate via an unfilled kerf system or to water collecting in voids created by possible never-bonds or disbonds of the laminate. For repairers, wet-core cases can still be difficult to diagnose, but the key to fixing wet core is first to determine whether the repair is absolutely necessary. In some cases, the cure might be worse than the disease, especially now that so much is known about the physical properties of wet core. To make an informed decision, you might need to consider a combination of infrared imaging, vacuum-drying, and resin-infusion processingall of which make it possible to pinpoint the affected area and treat it with or without major surgery, provided the core is of a type and condition that will respond to such an approach. In this session, well be looking at some assessment techniques to determine the extent of the damage and give you some tools for triage. Well also provide data on the physical properties of wet core, describe the repair options available to you, and answer your questions about resolving different types of wet-core scenarios. Rob Mazza (Marine Consultant for Baltek Inc.)Roby Scalvini (Marine Survey Bureau)

Its one thing to learn the skills to perform a profession, but do you have the senses and endurance to survive it? Every profession has its unique perils. Some can be mere speed bumps. Others are pits lined with punji stakes, and some can be purely physical. After all, the boatyard can be a dangerous place full of shaky ladders, vermin, chemicals, errant electrical current, and other hazards that you need to identify quickly and take action to avoid. Its just as critical, however, to detect liability landmines and conflicts that could set you up to take a fall for someone elses potentially unethical behavior. Theres an old saying that being sued as a surveyor is a when not an if. In this session, we hope to teach you how to predict and thus avoid dangers before they arise. Patricia Pat Kearns (Recreational Marine Experts Group)Jonathan Klopman (Marine Surveyor)Steve Knox (Knox Marine Consultants Inc.)Roby Scalvini (Marine Survey Bureau)

In this session, well help you decide when prepregs make sense for your boatshop. In comparison to wet-layup and infused laminates, high-performance prepregs are arguably more predictable, but theyre often seen as too costly. When can you justify your prepreg expenses for purchase and shipping, refrigerated storage, and high-temperature cure cycles? Could these materials and process differences be accommodated more readily by engineering for more conventional laminate types? Additionally, what other changes will prepregs bring to your shop? For example, you will likely need new tooling if you intend to convert to high-temperature cure cycles. [For more on this topic, see Session 402 Building High-Temperature Tooling.] Youll also find that some styles of cores that performed for you at a room-temperature cure or in an infusion process will behave differently above 212°F (100°C). Well consider these reservations and then move on to investigate the prepregs found in components that are subject to extremely high loadssuch as chainplates, rudderposts, and mastswhere high performance certainly wins out. Well also compare the green qualities of prepregs with other material-and-process combinations, weighing the environmental benefits against the energy requirements of refrigerators, ovens, and autoclaves. In the high-end racing world, fiber rigging is mainstream, valued for its strength, light weight, and low-stretch properties: all essential race-winning ingredients. The exotic fibers in, and construction techniques for, fiber rigging, however, come with exotic price tags, and the cost alone moves this rigging well beyond the means of most boat owners. Fortunately, alternatives are available at substantially lower costs. Compared to traditional stainless steel rigging, these affordable parts offer similar stretch and greater strength properties at a fraction of the weight. In this seminar, well explore the properties, test results, and track records of these materials, and well help you decide whether or not fiber rigging is a viable and cost-effective option for you and your customers. Nigel Calder (Calder Enterprises)
